Darnit... most of the time when the cats are being insanely cute, I don't have the camera within reach and if I go get it, they'll move. At the moment, Georgie is sitting on top of the TV watching the World Cup and trying to catch the little players running around the screen. LOL!! =)

I have now lived in one place longer than any other since before college... do you know how much stuff I have? Before I always had days to pack up an amount of stuff that could all fit in my car. And the one time I needed movers, I had weeks to pack. Michelle, how did you do this?! It seems so silly to pack things into boxes to move a few miles away...

I have both a newfound respect for and utter frustration with packing engineers. My blender/food processor has thorough UNpacking instructions, but no RE-packing instructions. I guess they don't count on people keeping the box. It must be a puzzle to figure out how to package it most efficiently, but it's really a puzzle trying to get it all back in. I eventually thought I had it all figured out, but I'm left with the lid not fitting in the box. Ah well, it will just have to do traveling separately. I may not know where I'm living yet, but today I realized that "Oh my god! I'm moving this month!". So I figured it best to at least start the packing process little by little since I won't have a whole lot of free time between working on the flight and a long weekend at home for a wedding. =b ("Oh my god! JP's getting married!") ; )

It's been awhile....
I'm probably going to be getting a new car soon and it will almost definitely be a hybrid. My brother recently switched companies over to Mazda, but still within the Ford group, so really the only reason I wouldn't go with a Ford group car is better fuel economy. What are the chances that my 9'6" surfboard can fit inside a Prius? Hmm... I might have to check it out, but I'm leaning toward the Ford Escape Hybrid. =) If any of you knowledgable car folks out there have tips on car buying, I'm all ears.
In doing some research on hybrids, I came across this Green Living website that, among other things, reviews all sorts of environmentally friend(lier) products. It all looks cool, but I really want to be able to tell people (someday when I own a house) that I have plyboo floors. lol!
I can officially call myself a professional photographer now, having had two paid jobs, including the album photography for a CD that was recently released by local singer/songwriter, Joel Mercado-See. Looking forward to more... [shameless plug] if you know people who need a photographer in the Houston area, feel free to refer them to my website which has had several additions since my last lj posts including CD/Promo portraits, new engagement shots and bridal portraits. [/shameless plug] Chloe just turned 2 last weekend - hard to believe. She's as adorable as ever with bright red hair that curls at the ends. (Several pictures from my visit last month are in my myspace blog (when you scroll down) if you want to see.)
I guess that's it for now... have a good one!

I don't know when work got insane, but I think it finally hit this week. I'm exhausted.
I had been thinking about what it would be like to live without a TV and maybe selling mine when I move. Tonight it came up that a co-worker/friend hasn't had one for a year and after hearing her talk about how much she loves it, I think I might be more likely to get rid of mine. Could be an interesting experiment... : )

I finally had my first surfing lesson this weekend!!! I love it - can't wait to go again! Ok, maybe I can wait a little cause I'm a little sore and slightly bruised, but hopefully there will be good waves again next weekend. : )
Also found a new favorite band... I went to see Anna Nalick last night and the opening act was Blue Merle. Holy beautiful harmonies... they blew me away! The lead singer's voice reminds me of Chris Martin (Coldplay) and I love the unusual instrumentation (with mandolin and fiddle) for a rock band. www.bluemerle.com ... you won't be sorry. = )
Oh, and on that note, I've added several new photo albums to my website in the past couple months (the concert section now requires two pages!) so if you haven't seen it recently, check it out.
Hope you all had a great weekend!

From the crowd in the Kemah parking lot tonight, you might have thought it was a summer Saturday night. I finally found a family leaving and followed them to their spot on the end of a row by a parking lot entrance. At the same time, a guy pulled into the entrance, cut me off and then made a threatening face at me. I was blocked from moving my car at that point, so I just sat there waiting for him to take the space and he would periodically turn and make rude gestures while mouthing "It's mine!" and generally being an asshole. He got the spot, I got stuck in the middle of a ton of cars while he stared at me. I was so tempted to stop and say something to him about how it wasn't necessary to be so rude, but I didn't. Figuring I'd spend the rest of my night looking for parking, I decided to leave.
So I'm driving away, really wishing I could say something to him and finally I decided: fuck it. I'm sick of people who aren't helping the situation and what did I have to lose. The guy had already walked off, but I went back and left a note on his car...
( To: The Man in the White Car )
...and then I felt better.

Hello, cool weather. So nice to see you again...
When I was little, 70 degrees meant it was almost time to wear shorts. This weekend, one step into 70 degrees and I was fantasizing about wearing scarves... I miss Michigan in the fall.

My cell phone stopped working during the hurricane and never started working again. I pretty much can't make calls and all incoming calls go to voicemail which I don't receive for 10 hours and the battery is always dying.
Wouldn't necessarily have been a huge deal except my parents are in Bali and I'm the point of contact for the whole family to get updates. So now I have a PC Phone thing for the month where I can make calls from my computer using a headset and microphone. (But people still can't call me.) And I'm trying to look into just upgrading my phone (though I'd hate to sign a contract extension and then have these problems continue with a new phone) instead of waiting for the warranty replacement but all the places I'm calling require a touch-tone phone which doesn't work with the PC Phone. So then I have to take my cell phone and hold the speaker up to the microphone and press the number on the cell to generate the touch-tone sound. This is starting to feel like a very jacked system.
[whine] I need a new phone!!! [/whine]

Woohoo! The UM Solar Car Team just added a third time as National Champions and 3rd in the World to the Michigan record! Only this time, they had to go a hell of a lot faster and farther and fend off tougher competition.
2005 North American Solar Challenge - longest solar car race in the world (2500 mi) from Austin to Calgary this past July (and we only won by 11 minutes... go Minnesota!)
World Solar Challenge - the original race across the Australian Outback (just now wrapping up)

| No hurricane here... |
[27 Sep 2005|09:47pm] |
I had typed up last week something about the evacuation to Austin, but then figured no one would want to read that much about driving. ; ) So here's the short version:
( short version of a long evacuation )
I had a great time in Austin! Heard the Matt White Band at the Pecan Street Festival and Tristan Prettyman, Rachael Yamagata and Jason Mraz at ACL. Got heat exhaustion due to the record heat (108 deg) so I missed Coldplay, but I'll see them another time. Also tried another yoga studio - slightly different, very interesting. Great weekend!
Ironically, the stuff I took with me suffered more damage than the stuff I left behind due to a shelf that collapsed in the hotel closet. The apartment was exactly as I left it - even the trees were fine. We didn't lose power as evidenced by the microwave clock and I'm starting to wonder if it even rained here.
What a weird experience.

I finally tried "cooking" (as in using a pot/pan to make something other than eggs) tonight for the first time in awhile. Even though it wasn't gourmet, I remembered how much I used to enjoy cooking when I lived at Mary's and the kitchen was the social hub of the house. I was thinking I should do it more - until I couldn't taste my food... remind me not to bother trying new things when I have a cold. :b

Got my hair cut last week... first time in awhile that I'm not crazy about the cut, but it's not so bad that I feel the need to go get it "fixed". Anyway, as usual, I spent some time a couple days before looking through magazines trying to find a picture of what I wanted. And, as usual, I didn't find it.
Well, tonight, I finally found a good picture as I was looking for drum samples online. Funny thing is, the picture is of a guy. haha! Oh well, guess I'll have to print it out for the next time I go to the hairdresser. :)

by all accounts I should be going to bed or getting there right now... not getting up. I've been on night shift for the past two weeks and, admittedly, I didn't make much effort to shift back yesterday, but come on... one day? sleep shifting by force is not a good idea. remind me never to do it again. technically, I think I'm allowed four days so I guess i'll just be late to work. if I was still in school this would be one of those days you practically show up in pajamas and everyone commiserates over how hard the homework set was before dragging yourself to lunch in the dorm and collapsing on the bed at 1pm to skip the rest of the day. i don't think that flies anymore, but that's what i feel like.

Work is insane. My next few weeks (and I apologize if this is meaningless to you...):
( I think this means overtime )
Deep breath. Believe it or not, only two of those things are a result of piling up from being on vacation - the rest is just all happening at the same time. It's no problem really - slow and steady gets the job done.
The thing that really stinks about it is that I have to miss the Mraz/Alanis concert next week since I'll be gone. I was really looking forward to that. = (

I love Hawaii.
Let me start over. I'm not sure if I've actually mentioned on here that I'm in a yoga teacher training program now and have been working on it for ~5 months (though it seems like a lot longer). Part of the training program is a 10-day intensive where you get 90 hours of the training and this time it was in Hawaii... I just got back this morning. I should be in bed now, having only slept an uncomfortable, plane-squished 2 hours of the last 36, but there's so much I should/want to do before I have to go back to work tomorrow.
Anyway, back to what I love about Hawaii. Aloha. Alo means knowing, presence and spirit. Ha means the breath of life. Together they mean love. You're always greeted with love. And forget the fact that taking coral, lava or sand is illegal - the real reason you shouldn't is that you'll be cursed if you take it. There is so much spirit to the people and the islands it amazes me. These past 10 days I got to witness how together with nature, we can heal ourselves. That intention is our most powerful tool in creating. That I could be eating so much healthier. That self-sustainable living can still be luxurious.
I guess I should get back to what I need to do (which is at least clearing off the bed) before bed. Aloha to everyone.
